How do we teach our children with special needs?

Necessary Introduction

The cases of people with special needs vary, but cases that suffer from neurological problems that affect brain cells are the most common because they cannot lead life and participate in normal situations and often suffer from anxiety and tension. Therefore, they need special care.

Academically, scientifically and educationally, they must be dealt and communicated with in ways different from others because their ability to think is relatively less than ordinary people to participate in learning and understand materials and things; however, that doesn’t mean that they can’t, as there are schools responsible for this job.  These people cannot think or remember things normally. Therefore, it must be ensured that teachers and specialists in schools and institutions for people with special abilities have obtained sufficient education and training that qualifies them to deal with these people so that they do not cause them psychological harm, such as depression or other psychological disorders and problems that are difficult to treat, as their ability to get rid of depression and treatment is lower than normal people.

Parents should also take into account many points in dealing with their children in life and educational situations to obtain the best results.

Therefore, before going into the educational issues of our children with special needs, we will stop at some important observations:

First:

If parents have a son with special needs, they should not distinguish between their children; it is necessary to be careful in dealing with them so that their feelings do not get hurt. They always get nervous and embarrassed when dealing with people. So parents should not show boredom or frustration with them in front of people and treat them in an appropriate manner.

A conscious and sophisticated society realizes that it needs all categories of its members; doctors, engineers, scientists and construction workers, each of whom represents a different importance in society, exactly as the body needs all its members, and the advancement and progress of society is measured by the amount of its investment in all its categories and the release of all their energies.

Second:

Disability can cause serious psychological loss and make people more isolated. Some people are sometimes cruel to people with special needs and this results in that people with disabilities and their families feel “different” from others. They feel sadness or loss and feel “broken”. Self-compassion can easily turn into depression and can be diagnosed as a psychological disorder. Remember that in addition to their physical needs, they must also take care of their mental health needs.

Third:

A person facing a disability means that the person does not have the ability to do the simple things that others can do in a simple and easy way; and the disabilities that a person suffers from may vary. He may have a physical disability such as having a limb amputated, or he may have a sensory impairment such as blindness, inability to speak or mental disability. But people surrounding those with disabilities (teachers, parents) should have the full awareness that they are not different from us and that they have their own skills that qualify them to do many things and make additions to the whole community.
