There are some behavior modification strategies used to improve adaptive skills, including:

  • Reinforcement: is rewarding the child for his good behavior with a kind word, a smile when meeting, praising him in front of his colleagues, giving him an appropriate gift, etc., which reinforces and supports this behavior.
  • Punishment: It is subjecting the child to a type of punishment after coming up with a specific response. If the child receives punishment whenever he assaults or harms others psychologically or physically, he will stop that aggression.
  • Extinguishing: is stopping responding as a result of the cessation of reinforcement. This method is based on the guide or teacher leaving the child when he makes a mistake, not commenting on him or drawing attention to him, and turning a blind eye to some of his actions.
  • Generalization: We use generalization when the effect of enhancing a behavior extends to circumstances other than the one in which the training occurred, that is, to extend to other situations or behaviors.
  • Discrimination: a learning process, which is the difference between similar stimuli, objects, and events, responding to the appropriate stimulus, and restricting the response to only some situations and stimuli. This occurs as a result of differential reinforcement, which includes enhancing behavior in one situation and extinguishing it in other situations.
