Dr. Maria Montessori is a world-renowned teacher and educator with a strong personality. She is also the first Italian doctor to follow the scientific method in education. She used to achieve this by observation, experiments and scientific research based on the study of children’s development and the mechanism of their education.
Maria Montessori was born in the town of Chiaravalle in the province of Ancona in central Italy in 1870 AD. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times for her death in the Netherlands in 1952 AD. She was interested in studying the works of two doctors, Jean Itard and Edouard Seguin, who were famous for their works on handicapped children. She was also influenced by the works of Johann Heinrich Pestaluzzi and Friedrich Vrubel, as well as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who demands the return of the child to the arms of nature. To adopt the Montessori idea of raising the child according to his inclinations to develop him spiritually, intellectually and kinesically through a group of activities that meet his needs and develop his capabilities within specialized institutions and according to precise educational specifications and objectives.
After that, Maria founded a school for the disabled called Ortovrinka and worked as its director for two years, during which she applied the principles of Seguin in raising children with mental disabilities, to achieve great success that made her discover that there are major mistakes in the ways and methods of teaching normal children, as Montessori says her famous saying:
While people were so impressed with the success of my students with special needs, I was so amazed that even the normal children remained at such a poor level of education.
Therefore, I concluded that the methods that succeeded with the handicapped, if they were used with ordinary children, there is no doubt that they will succeed resoundingly.
