Can a person with Down syndrome get married and have children?
The answer is: Yes, a person with Down syndrome can get married and have children, and there are many successful experiences in marriage and childbearing in such category of people.
They reach maturity like other humans, and they feel sexual desire but do not know how to express it, which may cause an incomplete marriage, according to the different degrees of intelligence of the affected cases, some are of high intelligence, others are of average intelligence or limited intelligence. There is more than one type of Down syndrome, and the presence of individual differences depends on the degree of the mental disorder.
But with the development of scientific methods in dealing with Down syndrome, this mental disorder has been largely overcome with early awareness.
What about the fertility of individuals with Down syndrome and their ability to reproduce?
First: Females with Down syndrome
Studies and research have proven that females with Down syndrome have a fertility rate of up to 50%, and that a large number of them have been able to complete nine months of pregnancy, but a large number of them give birth to premature babies. Any premature baby, i.e, born before the completion of 37 weeks of pregnancy (more than 3 weeks before the due date of delivery).
Second: Males with Down syndrome
It has been proven that the degree of fertility of males with Down syndrome is much lower than the degree of fertility of other males of similar ages, and this is detected by semen analysis.
What about the menstrual cycle of girls and women with Down syndrome who have normal and regular periods?
The menstrual cycle of girls and women with Down syndrome is not different from that of other normal women, and most girls and women with Down syndrome have regular menstrual cycles. On average, menstruation begins at the age of 12 years, and it may start as early as 10 years, or as late as 14 years.
Does puberty delay in males with Down syndrome than other normal males?
The onset of puberty may slightly delay in males with Down syndrome than other normal males, but this is not conclusive for comparison, but when the anatomy of the genitals of people with Down syndrome was studied, it was found that they are completely similar to the genitals of normal males.
