In the normal body, each body cell contains 46 chromosomes, so the individual inherits 23 chromosomes from the father and 23 from the mother. Thus, each individual has 23 pairs of chromosomes, while a person with Down syndrome has 47 chromosomes, and the extra chromosome is in “the pair of chromosomes number 21”, which in affected children becomes composed of 3 chromosomes instead of 2 only.
